The film opens with his trial and charts his rise from the projects of crime ridden suburban Delhi to the very heart of the corridors of power. Along the way he makes lifelong friends, falls in love and manages to outwit the entire law and order machinery.Arrested by Special Crime Branch Inspector Devender Singh, Lucky Singh (Abhay Deol) reflects upon his life: his childhood, his father's second marriage, his siblings; his entry into crime and association with Gogi Arora (Paresh Rawal); his romance with and subsequent marriage with the lovely Sonal (Neetu Chandra); and his subsequent betrayal by his hanger-on and a business partner. Meanwhile the media speculates on how he got away with stealing 140 TV sets, 212 Video cassette recorders, 475 shirts, 90 music systems, 50 jewelry boxes, 2 dogs, and a greeting card - in a spree of burglaries that included households in Bangalore, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and other cities in India.At age 13, Lucky had a difficult relationship with his father who brought a 2nd wife home in presence of his 1st wife. He has a crush on a girl who works at a greeting cards store. He doesn't have money to take her on dates & that marks the start of his criminal career with petty thefts to fund his dates. It starts with scooter parts & railway sidings. Years later he & his business associate, Rastogi, do odd jobs for a living. Lucky meets Gogi Arora at a wedding where Gogi is a small-time stage performer but has big connections. Lucky steals a Mercedes for him after their first meeting. Gogi asks Lucky to chaperon a minister's son in the car & sends his dancer Dolly to escort the son. Instead of going home the son decides to go to a disco, & Lucky decides to go inside as well & flirts with Dolly. The minister's son is angry & leaves. Lucky takes drunk Dolly home & meets Sonal, Dolly's sister.Lucky's confidence increases & he enters homes of rich people with impunity & in broad daylight to steal cars, TVs, music systems & jewelry. Gogi acts as his fence. Lucky asks Sonal out on a date & she accepts. She knows that Lucky is a professional thief. Dolly comes on to Lucky, but he rejects her advances. Dolly warns Lucky to stay away from Sonal. Gogi tries to sow doubts in mind of Rastogi against Lucky as Lucky is the only reason Rastogi is even in business. Lucky decides to go to a different fence who is giving a better rate. Gogi finds out & confronts Lucky. He appears to forgive him, but then gets Lucky arrested via Delhi police. Lucky figures it out. He appears to cooperate with the police but escapes after gaining their trust.After his escape, Lucky goes National & conducts theft in Mumbai, Nasik and other big towns all over the country. His affair with Sonal continues despite Sonal being worried about Lucky being apprehended someday. Few months later after his escape from police, Lucky meets Rastogi. Rastogi used to revere Gogi, but after Gogi failed to get bail for Rastogi (after Lucky escaped), Rastogi was on the streets. Lucky takes him back.Lucky burgles the house of a TV presenter who was doing an expose on him. The special branch of police gets on Lucky's tail & pressurizes Gogi to reveal Lucky's whereabouts. Lucky takes Sonal & Rastogi for a vacation. He meets his brother Pammi on the vacation, but Pammi is aloof. He reveals that their dad now lives separately with his 2nd wife & their mom lives with Pammi. Lucky decides to marry Sonal & goes to invite his dad. His stepmom tells Lucky that they won't attend the wedding as they also have a daughter who cannot be called the sister of a thief.Lucky meets Dr Handa, a animal doctor, who wants to open a restaurant. He is a genuine person & Lucky develops trust in him. Lucky even puts up 4 Lakhs cash to cement his partnership with Handa. But, since he doesn't have any papers, Lucky makes Rastogi as the legal partner in the business. Handa tries to warn Lucky, but Lucky insists. Handa helps Lucky to buy an apartment where Lucky plans his future with Sonal. Handa is aware of Lucky's involvement in the theft cases in the city.Handa is a respected man in his neighborhood, and people start asking questions to him about his association with Lucky. Handa starts giving Lucky the cold shoulder when the restaurant goes live. Lucky confronts Handa & Handa says that his partner is Rastogi & not Lucky.Lucky goes back to theft with a vengeance. His notoriety increases and the special branch steps up pressure on Gogi to reveal the whereabouts of Lucky. Gogi meets Lucky via Rastogi & warns Lucky to align with Gogi or face the consequences. Lucky is angry at Rastogi & believes that Gogi sent Rastogi after Lucky & Gogi was the one who bailed Rastogi out. Lucky breaks his alliance with Rastogi.Rastogi sells Lucky out to the special branch team, who arrests Lucky shortly thereafter. This time after a full media circus, Lucky is transported from Mumbai to Delhi for trial. But once again, he gains the trust of the Special Branch inspector & escapes at the first available opportunity. He escapes 3 more times before he is finally apprehended & put behind bars for good.
