Conceited social media influencer Deidre and her comparatively reserved friend Charlotte join their other friend Heather on a trip to a remote home that belongs to Heather's father in California's Mojave Desert. After an afternoon of lounging by the pool, the women prepare to livestream a rare meteor shower, but unfortunately discover their phones no longer function.A meteorite lands in the pool. The women fish it out to discover the rock actually appears to be an unknown animal that vaguely resembles an armadillo.The next day, the women discover that the creature shed its shell. Uncertain what it is, the women ask 15 year-old gardener Brett to remove it from the yard. Brett agrees to do so in exchange for a kiss from Charlotte, which she reluctantly gives.Unaware it is an alien, Brett hits the creature with a shovel. The creature hisses at Brett, causing him to run away in fright.Deidre proposes killing the foul-smelling thing, but Charlotte refuses. The women agree to at least pull it out of the sun while they resume partying by the pool for a photo shoot.Charlotte hears the creature crying during the night. Feeling sympathetic, Charlotte swaddles the creature in a blanket and brings it inside the house.Deidre becomes upset when she finds the creature in the house. Heather forces Charlotte to take it back outside, but the alien shrieks loudly when Charlotte tries to move it.Deidre insists that Charlotte go into town to find a vet or an animal wrangler to collect the creature. Heather recommends taking an all-terrain buggy to their eccentric neighbor Edna's cabin to see if Edna can give them a ride.While Charlotte and Heather are gone, Deidre tries to feed poison to the creature. The alien hypnotizes Deidre.Charlotte and Heather arrive at Edna's to find her place deserted. However, they do find worrisome journals related to tracking the meteor shower. When they return to the house, Charlotte and Heather observe Deidre behaving as though distracted and no longer concerned about the creature.Heather wakes in the night to find the creature morphing into a tentacled blob that envelops Deidre. The alien entrances Heather into undressing and assimilating with the blob.Charlotte is confused the next morning when Deidre and Heather are both in strange moods as well as welcoming of the creature. Upon learning it is now in Heather's bed, Charlotte tries to check on the creature, but it frightens her away with a hiss.Charlotte insists on leaving immediately. Deidre calmly reminds her their phones aren't working, so they can't call for a ride.Charlotte returns to Edna's cabin to see if she can find keys to Edna's truck. Charlotte finds a sketch of the creature inside Edna's meteor shower journal. She then finds Edna dead from having shot herself in the face outside.Charlotte hurries back to the house. Charlotte tries to explain what she saw, but Deidre and Heather are both disinterested.Charlotte confronts the creature. The alien begins hypnotizing her, but Charlotte snaps out of its trance.Charlotte tries to get through to Deidre and Heather. Deidre angrily rants at Charlotte until she sees that her and Heather's bellies are suddenly bulging. Deidre and Heather begin vomiting black liquid that also bleeds from their eyes.Charlotte goes back inside to try to kill the creature. Deidre and Heather become possessed and physically stop Charlotte. The creature tries mesmerizing Charlotte again, but she breaks free once more and clubs it to death.Charlotte uses the buggy to chase down and run over Heather. Charlotte then uses the blunt weapon that killed the alien to beat Heather to death too.Charlotte prepares to club Deidre, but a concerned cowboy arrives and shoots Charlotte. The cowboy tries to escort Deidre back to his Jeep, but Deidre kills him. Charlotte rises, recovers the cowboy's rifle, and shoots Deidre.
