Amreek (Arjun Kapoor) resides in Los Angeles with his girlfriend Radha (Rakul Preet Singh). Both run a movers and packers company called 'Gently Gently'. The company are a movers and packers firm, but Amreek is clumsy and keeps breaking stuff belonging to their customers, and Radha has to apologize for his mistakes.
Amreek has a laid-back and carefree attitude and doesn't believe in owning up to his mistakes. Amreek feels that people having attachment to materialistic things is unrealistic as materialistic belongings break sometime or later. He admits that he has no emotions.
This affects his work and also his relations with Radha. When pushed, Amreek says that he is like this, and asks Radha to take it or leave it.
Fed up with his behavior, Radha breaks up with him. Amreek is devastated. This is when his father, Gurkeerat aka Gurki (Kanwaljit Singh) calls him from his home in Amritsar. He tells Amreek that he should return immediately as his grandmother, Sardar Kaur (Neena Gupta), is sick. Sardar, aged 90, has a tumor. The doctors advise Gurki that they should take her home as operating her at this age can prove fatal. Gurki realizes Sardar doesn't have much time, but he hides this fact from Sardar.
Amreek's family lives in a joint home with his mother Simmi (Soni Razdan), sister Pinky (Mahika Patiyal), cousin brother Lovely (Ravjeet Singh) and Lovely's mother Honey (Divya Seth).
Sardar owns controlling stake in Champion Cycles, and she has promised Lovely that she will make him CEO, but it is clear that Amreek is her favorite Grandson.Sardar, meanwhile, has a wish. She wants to go to Lahore and visit the house that she built with her husband, late Gursher Singh (John Abraham) in 1946. Gursher and Sardar took a broken down, dilapidated house and made it into a home with their hard work and savings. Gursher ran a small garage fixing bicycles. They had big dreams of buying the nearby plots to make a bigger house where their coming generations would live in safety and prosperity.
A year later, during Partition, Gursher was stabbed to death while fighting the rioters, and protecting Sardar from any harm. Sardar (Aditi Rao Hydari) managed to escape and reached India on a cycle via Wagah border.
Since then, she has been missing Gursher and the house. Hence, it's her desire to visit Pakistan so that she could see her ancestral house. Sardar tells Amreek about it and is adamant that her house is still standing where she left it.
Amreek realizes that Sardar has been missing Gursher for 70 years, while he is pained at missing Radha just for a few days.Gurki advises Sardar that she can't travel in this condition. But Amreek realizes how much this means to her. He promises her that he'll help fulfill her wish. He tries to get her visa. However, her application is rejected as she's blacklisted from visiting Pakistan. This is because a few years ago, she had attacked a Pakistani official, Saqlain Niazi (Kumud Mishra) when she had gone to watch an India vs Pakistan cricket match in Mohali. This is when Amreek learns that Radha has transplanted a nearly hundred-year-old tree in the United States with the company Gently Gently. Amreek thus begins to learn about structural relocation and realizes that a lot of people have successfully lifted a house and transplanted it to a different location. Amreek requests help from both the government of India and Pakistan for his mission. Both decide to help him, in principle as both Governments are worried that the other one will renege on their commitment.
Amreek then reaches out to Radha to engage Gently Gently on the actual shift of the house from Lahore to Amritsar. Radha is still angry with Amreek and refuses to help. Amreek resolves to accomplish the task by himself.Amreek then decides to visit Lahore. However, he hides about his plan from Sardar. He fears that if he fails in his endeavor, she'll be heartbroken. Hence, Amreek pretends to go back to Los Angeles in front of Sardar. Sardar is dejected as she only had hopes from Amreek that he would take her to Lahore.Amreek reaches Lahore, via the Wagah border. He is successfully able to find Sardar's house. But when he reaches there, he sees that the local authorities are about to demolish the structure. But he stops it and is arrested by Inspector Rauf Khalid (Shahid Lateef). Rauf verifies the reason for Amreek's visit. Turns out the builder Khan Sahab (Masood Akhtar) who was demolishing the structure is from Amritsar and is sympathetic to Amreek. Khan agrees to Amreek taking the house, if the land remains with him, to which Amreek agrees.Amreek needs permission from the mayor (who is actually Saqlain Niazi, the official whom his grandmother had hit in the match) to move the house, which Niazi flatly refuses.
This is when Radha reaches Lahore and tells Rauf that he needs a permission from the Archeological department to demolish any structure more 70 years old. Khan is supportive of Amreek and agrees with Radha.
Amreek's story is picked up by the media and soon the Indian PM calls the Pakistan PM to request assistant in the mammoth task.
Niazi has to officially agree to move the house but asks Amreek to tell Sardar to apologize to him, else he will put obstacles in his path. Amreek shows a doctored video of Sardar, where she is apologizing to her dog, to Niazi, and he signs the papers.Despite numerous difficulties, and a hawk-eye vigil from Niazi, Radha and Amreek manage to pull the house from its foundations and load it onto a large truck for transportation. Radha and Amreek reconnect.
But Niazi figures out that the apology video was for her dog, and not for him.
Niazi confronts Amreek again and won't let him move the power lines to shift the house and doesn't care if Sardar lives or dies. As Amreek prepares to fight Niazi, Rauf stops him and makes him realize that the public supports him, and they have lifted the power lines with bamboo sticks to clear the path.
Amreek brings the house back to India passing through Wagah border. Sardar's wish is fulfilled. In the end, it is revealed that Sardar dies seven years after, and divides the property in three equal shares. It is also revealed that Amreek and Radha marry and move to back to America and have two daughters and a son, named after his grandmother.
